Scarborough: Boehner a bar hopper

By: Jake Sherman
June 30, 2010 09:39 AM EDT

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said House Minority Leader John Boehner "is not a hard worker" and cuts out of the Capitol early for bar-hopping evenings in Washington.

On his “Morning Joe” show Wednesday morning, the former Florida Republican congressman described Boehner as a disengaged pol whose work ethic doesn’t hold a candle to that of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.).

“I hear it on the Hill,” Scarborough said. “I’m sure you hear it on the Hill all the time. It’s not reported. But so many Republicans tell me this is a guy that is not the hardest worker in the world. After 5 o'clock, 6 clock at night, he’s disengaged at best. And you can see him around town. He does not have, let's say, the work hours of Newt Gingrich.”

“Nobody’s talking about it,” Scarborough continued. “Every Republican I talk to says John Boehner, by 5 or 6 o’clock at night, you can see him at bars. He is not a hard worker.”

I don't see the story here.

Are they saying he does not get his job done?

Are they saying he is leaving things undone?

Many people don't work past 5 or 6 in the evening. Is Boehner the only rep in either house who does not burn the midnight oil?

Does he burn the midnight oil if there is a need to do so?

Sounds like a gossip trying to insinuate something without actually making any charges.

I don't see the story here.

If his personal schedule interferes with his professional obligations, then say so and be done with it. Demonstrate how his schedule makes him a less effective representative. Otherwise, what's the issue?

If Franken's doodling while on duty is not an issue, why is Boehner's not working late one?

The story is that word of Boehner's work ethic on The Hill is coming from a fellow Republican, who served with Boehner in congress.

True, but the reports were not that he didn't get the work done, just that he doesn't spend enough hours to qualify for the Nights with Newt Club.

If he can get the work done in an appropriate manner, perhaps he is working smarter instead of harder?

My point is, he is criticized for not putting in the hours, as if he was a lawyer with a quota of billable hours that he is not meeting. The was no criticism of his job performance in the article, just comments about his not working late hours.

Or did I miss something?

The people on Cap. Hill work very long hours and if Boehner skips out early, and does not have a good work ethic, I have no reason to disbelieve Scarborough. If anyone would know about Boehner's work ethic, I would think that it could be a fellow member of the GOP.

Let me also add that there is quite a history of alcoholism on Cap. Hill, also. I'm not saying that is true with Boehner, but I wouldn't be surprised.
El Duderino
most politicians lack any real work ethic as they do not often come from working class backgrounds. But we are talking about the GOP which was complaining about being forced to be in DC more for longer since Democrats took over.

I know of a few of them who did enjoy frequenting The Hawk N' Dove, even before the workday ended;

The late Charlie Wilson loved that place, and he loved his rye.

Who said he gets the work done, in an appropriate manner or otherwise?

It's obvious that McConnell is running the whole show, the House just follows the Senate leader and Boner does nothing more but show up to a couple of press conferences to make inaccurate hypocritical jibes.

At his last press conference, Boner seemed drunk as a skunk.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is McConnell who is taking more of a leadership role than Boehner ever had the taste for. I was surprised with the remarks of Joe Scarborough talking about Boehner's work ethic on the Hill.

And I also wouldn't be surprised if he does have an obession with the bottle. Alcoholism on Cap Hill is an occupational hazard there.

An interesting Op.-Ed. from Eugene Robinson of The WA.PO.

Well, besides his work ethic, I think Scarborough was more than hinting that Boner is an infamous boozer. Sorry to put that so bluntly, but that's sort of been an open secret for a while now.

One can easily tell either a drunk, or an alcoholic. He has the bags under his eyes, which do not always mean a lack of sleep, but a real problem with alcohol. Take a good loke at Gov. Ed Rendell of Pa., and it's easy to tell that he has that same problem.

I love Eugene Robinson. He's so great at hitting the nail on the head, with class and wit.

But let's face it. Boner's comments were just ANOTHER rare moment of honesty from a Republican, not unlike Barton's apology to BP. They said it, because it's what they think, believe and feel.

They're heartless, selfish MFer Corporatists to the core... and the pretense that they're not, just becomes too much like hard work, and they can't help but let a little honesty ooze through their cracks, the way Boner's screaming self-tanner addiction oozes down HIS crack.

I object.

Without proof that Boehner is a bar-hopper, I don't think it's OK to write that in the title of the thread.
Just because Scarborough says it .... not enough!

This is like the Gore thing ... just because his victim calls him a sexual predator, doesn't mean it can be mentioned here.

Let's change the title - k?

John Boehner enters Maryland rehab facility

by Walid

(Washington D.C.): Unconfirmed sources report Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican minority leader, has voluntarily entered The Carol M. Porto Treatment Center. The center features residential program for substance abuse treatment, intervention, work therapy, but is known for the treatment of pathological lying.

According to Dr. Carol M. Porto the facilities program director this is the fourth time the center has been visited by Representative John Boehner. "We just love John Boehner. We have been helping him with this drinking problems for years but now we are working with John on this pathological lying problem."

"We plan to focus on Johns problem with health care, he just can't control himself his pathological lying has really endangered the national debate." According to Porto.

The Carol M. Porto Treatment Center (Calvert Treatment Facility), managed by DWI Services, Inc., is a residential program for substance abuse treatment, intervention, work therapy, and stabilization in variable lengths of stay.

And sadly, sok, he's not the only one.

I guess it's a culture of working long hours, 2-3 hour recesses, long vacation recesses when they spend most of their time raising funds across the country, and there is usually a plentiful amount of alcohol that flows at those fundraisers. I would not like their lifestyle.

Wow, I saw him interviewed recently and he acted like he was loaded. He acted like he was just sick and tired of it all. I wish him well in rehab should that be truth v rumor. It takes a brave person to admit they need help. He gets some points with me if he checked in. Get Well Soon John!

I wouldn't doubt that he would have had a few "belts under the buckle" when being interviewed, but that article is a parody.

Didn't you notice the clinic centre was managed by DWI Services? I laughed when I saw that! laugh.gif
